This is a test for contraction of the IT band. The patient is placed in a sidelying position with the nonaffected leg down against the table and the affected leg up. Abduct the leg and flex the knee to 90 degrees while keeping the hip joint in neutral position and then bring the leg into slight hip extension and external rotation. On release of the thigh the leg should drop into an adducted position. The thigh will remain abducted in a positive test.
