Gait Assessment

In normal walking 60% of time is spent in the stance phase (20% double limb support) and 40% in the swing phase. During gait, the pelvis and trunk usually shift slightly to the weight-bearing side. If there is gluteus medius weakness, the lateral shift of the trunk is more pronounced (“abduction or gluteus medius lurch”) and if there thorax posteriorly to maintain hip extension (“extensor or gluteus maximus lurch”) Altered gait may be due to truncal or lower limb malalignment, lower extremity muscle joint weakness, joint instability, joint limited range of motion, and/or pain.
