Appendicitis

Appendicitis is an infection of the appendix, a small pouch located at the beginning of the large intestine. This diagnosis has proven to be difficult to diagnose due to its variety in presentation of symptoms. For children, it is particularly difficult to diagnosis because anatomically the bowel tends to reside lower in the abdominal cavity. Common symptoms of Appendicitis in children include: fever, nausea, vomiting, right lower quadrant pain, and right hip/thigh/pelvis pain. Inability to walk or walking with a limp has been reported to be a significant finding in patients with appendicitis. According to one report one quarter of all appendicitis patients had right hip pain or stiffness.
